CHAPTER 7 - A CHANGE IN OUR LIFE
It's now the fall of 1990, the colleges have replied and Eric has decided to go to Haverford College in Pennsylvania. It's a very nice, highly selective liberal arts college just outside of Philly. We have only two problems with the college - it's too far away, (6 hours) and it's too close to Philly (15 minutes). Otherwise it is perfect. We spent the spring working at the different properties - Stebbins, Welshbush and Kayuta. It seems there was much to do this year, especially with the many enhancements we've made at Kayuta and attempting to please two new tenants at Welshbush. Eric is off to college and we have just closed the camp for the winter. Eric going to college is probably the biggest event to affect the family this year. He loves it, both the academic and social aspects of the college. The choice of Haverford as the college for him was perfect. His going to college has affected the rest of the family more than we anticipated. We have gained a stronger appreciation of Eric since he has been away. He was awarded the Exceptional Student award at graduation and they were right on. He is an exceptional student and individual. His knowledge is vast on many subjects and his thirst for knowledge seems unquenchable. He has also come out of his shell socially and discovered the joys and sorrows of associations with the opposite sex. His leadership skills are strong with room for improvement in his diplomacy. Darren has also been affected by Eric's absence. They discovered they were each other’s best friends. Darren, now a freshman, has formed a strong relationship with a senior girl named Sara. Between Sara and soccer in the fall, his grades are starting to slip. Darren appears to be as strong socially as Eric is academically. His personality and charm are undeniably winners. He has tremendous potential academically but we can't seem to turn it on. We really enjoyed the summer, although the whole year has been very busy. Eric's high school graduation celebrated with a party at home and another with 30 kids on the island at camp. This was followed by Eric's promotion to Eagle Scout in late August and an extensively planned celebration. Getting Eric off to college and then visiting for parents weekend three weeks later. And finally Darren's confirmation party on the weekend that Eric came home in October. This weekend (October 13th) we went to camp on a rainy Saturday so that both boys could go water-skiing before we closed the camp. |
